AeroPress

The Ratios

  • 11g coffee
  • 200g water @ 95C

Method

  1. Insert the plunger into the AeroPress until it reaches the top of the four marker.
  2. Flip the AeroPress upside-down so it is resting on the plunger, with the cap side open, facing up. See an example here.
  3. Add a splash of hot water and swirl the coffee to ensure all the grounds are wet.
  4. Add the remaining water to the aeropress. The water line should be at the one marker. Do not overfill.
  5. Brew for two minutes or until suitable.
  6. Place the paper filter in the cap of the AeroPress and tighten.
  7. Swiftly flip the AeroPress onto your cup.
  8. Press the plunger firmly aiming to complete the press in approximately 30 seconds.
  9. Pull back on the plunger slightly to reduce spillage.
  10. Enjoy.

Notes

I tend to prefer cooler water around 85C for a longer period of time. This works especially well with medium - darker roasts of coffee. Longer brew times can yield more flavor and complexity, however there are deminishing returns past the three minute mark. This recipe is in many ways, the starting point. It works well in lots of conditions, including with store bought pre-ground coffee.

This recipe was developed by James Hoffmann in his AeroPress Series. If you have not heard of him, and want to dive into the deep rabbit hole of coffee check out his YouTube and Website.
